Urgent Gale Warning Issued: What Coastal Residents Must Do Before 60-MPH Winds Hit
• Hot Trendy News
Lake Erie, western New York and southern Ontario are bracing for a powerful late-November storm system that has already triggered gale warnings on both sides of the border. Environment Canada upgraded its alert early Wednesday as southwest winds are forecast to ramp up to 65-74 km/h by evening and whip up waves of 6 m—with isolated crests near 6.7 m—across eastern Lake Erie through Friday.
Across the lake in Buffalo, the U.S. National Weather Service (NWS) is warning that “strong winds will cause hazardous waves which could capsize or damage vessels and reduce visibility,” coinciding with one of the busiest Thanksgiving travel periods. Officials expect a rare seiche to develop, pushing water levels 1.7 m higher at the eastern basin while dropping them by roughly 1.8 m near Toledo. The result could be rapid shoreline flooding in low-lying areas, especially along the Niagara Parkway, which Niagara Parks closed Wednesday afternoon as a precaution.
Great Lakes mariners are no strangers to powerful “Gales of November,” yet this setup is notable for its duration: sustained gale-force conditions of 34–47 knots (63–87 km/h) are projected to linger into Friday morning. Small-craft operators on Lake Michigan are also under an advisory for 2–3 m waves and northwest gusts up to 30 knots after an earlier Gale Warning was in effect Thursday.
What travelers should know
• Road spray and blowing snow squalls are possible downwind of the lakes, creating sudden white-out conditions from Erie, Pennsylvania, to London, Ontario.
• Lakeside routes such as I-90 in New York and Highway 3 in Ontario may experience detours or temporary closures due to debris and overwash.
• Ferry services on Lakes Erie, Ontario and Michigan could be suspended—check schedules before departure.
Marine and shoreline safety tips
1. Stay off breakwalls, piers and exposed beaches until winds subside; waves of this height can sweep onlookers into the water.
2. Secure docks, boats and loose objects; mooring lines should be doubled where possible.
3. Monitor VHF channel 16, Weatheradio and Coast Guard updates every few hours for possible upgrades to a Storm Warning.
Storm track and timing
A fast-moving Colorado low is forecast to deepen rapidly as it crosses the upper Great Lakes on Thursday, dragging an Arctic cold front across southern Ontario and western New York overnight. Behind the front, a tight pressure gradient will maintain gale-force westerlies through Friday midday before easing below Small Craft Advisory criteria by Friday evening.
Looking ahead
Conditions will improve in time for weekend travel, but forecasters note another low may arrive early next week. Residents are urged to replenish emergency kits and review 72-hour preparedness plans now, while weather is top-of-mind.
Bottom line
The first major “Gale of November” is here, packing near-hurricane-force gusts and surf seldom seen outside tropical systems. Heed official warnings, postpone non-essential lake travel and keep a close eye on forecast updates—your safety could depend on it.
