Extreme Heat Warning: Record-Shattering Temperatures Poised to Grip Nation and Test Power Grid

Met Office issues wide-ranging amber extreme heat warning
London, the South East, the East Midlands and large parts of eastern and central England woke up this morning under an amber extreme heat warning, only the third such alert the Met Office has issued this summer. Forecasters expect the mercury to climb as high as 38 °C (100.4 °F) this afternoon, with overnight temperatures stubbornly stuck above 22 °C, creating dangerous “tropical nights” that prevent homes from cooling.
Hottest day of 2026 so far: 38.1 °C recorded at Kew Gardens
By midday, Kew Gardens in west London had registered 38.1 °C, provisionally the hottest reading anywhere in the UK this year and the fifth heatwave episode since May. Meteorologists warn that surface-level temperatures on roads and playgrounds could exceed 50 °C, magnifying heat-stroke risk for children, outdoor workers and pets.
Health officials activate heat-health alerts
The UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) has activated a level-3 heat-health alert for southern and eastern regions, advising vulnerable people—especially those over 65 or with pre-existing respiratory or cardiac conditions—to stay hydrated, avoid midday sun and keep indoor rooms below 25 °C where possible. Hospitals in London and Birmingham report a 17 % uptick in heat-related A&E visits since Tuesday, while pharmacy chains say sales of electrolyte drinks have doubled week-on-week.
Wildfire and drought threats intensify
Fire crews remain on standby across Surrey, Kent and East Anglia after humidity dipped below 25 % overnight. The National Fire Chiefs Council has upgraded its wildfire severity index to “very high,” noting that bone-dry heathland can ignite in under 30 seconds if exposed to barbecues or discarded cigarettes. Reservoir levels in the Thames catchment have fallen to 58 % of seasonal norms, prompting water companies to consider temporary usage bans.
Transport and energy networks under strain
Network Rail has imposed speed restrictions on key commuter routes into London to reduce the risk of steel rails buckling. The National Grid forecasts electricity demand could hit a seasonal record this evening as millions of households power fans and air-conditioning units; engineers have asked large industrial users to shift consumption outside the 5 p.m.–8 p.m. peak.
How to stay safe during the extreme heat
• Drink 2–3 L of water daily; avoid alcohol and high-sugar soft drinks.
• Close curtains on sun-facing windows, then open them and ventilate rooms once the outdoor temperature drops.
• Wear loose, light-coloured cotton clothing and a broad-brimmed hat.
• Check on elderly neighbours twice a day and never leave children or pets in parked cars.
• Use high-factor (SPF 30+) sunscreen and reapply every two hours if outdoors.
Climate scientists: “This could be the new normal”
Researchers at the Grantham Institute say rising global average temperatures have increased the likelihood of UK 35 °C events fivefold since the 1970s. Every fraction of a degree of additional warming, they warn, will make extreme heat warnings more frequent, longer and harder to manage. Policy advisers are urging ministers to fast-track urban tree-planting programmes and revise building regulations so that new homes can pass passive-cooling standards.
With the current amber warning set to remain in force until Saturday evening, authorities stress that individual behaviour over the next 72 hours—cutting fire risks, conserving water and looking after vulnerable people—will determine whether this heatwave is remembered for shattered records or avoided tragedies.
