A powerful magnitude-6.2 earthquake struck Japan’s western Chugoku region at 10:18 a.m. local time Tuesday, rattling Shimane and neighbouring prefectures, injuring at least five people and triggering dozens of aftershocks, according to the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) and local authorities.
Epicentre and seismic details
• Epicentre: eastern Shimane Prefecture, about 10 km beneath the surface, making the tremor feel stronger than its moment magnitude suggests.
• Intensity: upper 5 on Japan’s shindo scale (maximum 7), strong enough to topple furniture and crack walls.
• Aftershocks: more than 30 shocks greater than M3 have hit the area within six hours; officials warn residents to expect further shaking for several days.
No tsunami threat, but infrastructure hit
The JMA confirmed no tsunami was generated, easing fears for Japan’s Sea of Japan coastline. However, transport and power infrastructure experienced temporary disruption:
• West Japan Railway suspended Sanyo Shinkansen bullet-train services between Shin-Osaka and Hakata for safety inspections; limited local lines also paused. Trains were gradually resuming by late afternoon.
• Chugoku Electric Power said its Shimane nuclear plant, 32 km from the epicentre, reported no abnormalities and continued operating normally.
• At least 9,800 households briefly lost electricity; service was restored within two hours, utility officials said.
• Prefectural roads in Izumo and Unnan closed due to fallen rocks and a collapsed stone wall; emergency crews are clearing debris.
Casualties and emergency response
Shimane’s disaster management office confirmed five non-life-threatening injuries—mainly cuts from shattered glass and falls during evacuation. No fatalities have been reported. More than 1,200 residents spent the afternoon in designated evacuation centres as engineers assess building safety.
Government reaction
Prime Minister Fumio Kishida, addressing reporters minutes after the quake, urged the public to “stay alert for strong aftershocks” and pledged rapid deployment of Self-Defense Forces to assist local governments if needed. The Cabinet Office set up an emergency liaison unit to coordinate information flow.
Why this quake matters now
Japan lies along the Pacific “Ring of Fire” and experiences about 20 percent of the world’s M6+ quakes annually. Today’s Shimane earthquake is the strongest to hit the region since the M6.1 Osaka quake of June 2018, renewing concerns about urban preparedness as seismic activity has been trending upward nationwide over the past year.
Safety tips for residents
1. Anchor tall furniture and secure water heaters.
2. Keep a “go-bag” with three days’ food, water, batteries and medication.
3. During aftershocks, drop, cover and hold on—move away from windows.
4. Use text or social media to check on loved ones and keep phone lines free for emergencies.
Outlook
Meteorologists say aftershocks measuring up to M5 could persist for a week. While the lack of tsunami and nuclear impact eases immediate fears, infrastructure inspections may cause rolling transport delays through Wednesday. Travelers are advised to monitor rail company updates, and residents should follow local government alerts for potential landslides in saturated soil zones.
