Rookie Sensation Dylan Cardwell Powers Kings with Near Double-Double—Is Sacramento’s New Paint Protector the Real Deal?
• Hot Trendy News
Sacramento, CA – Sacramento Kings rookie center Dylan Cardwell continues to force the front office’s hand after another energetic cameo against the Houston Rockets, chipping in nine points, 11 rebounds and an assist in just 19 minutes off the bench during Sunday’s 111-98 win – missing his first NBA double-double by a single point.
The undrafted 6-10 rim-runner is on a two-way deal that limits him to 50 NBA appearances, yet he has already logged 12 games before the halfway mark of the season while anchoring the second unit’s defense. Cardwell ranks second among Kings reserves in blocks (1.3 per game) and offensive rebounds (2.1) since debuting on December 3, giving coach Mike Brown a much-needed interior spark whenever starter Maxime Raynaud rests.
Sunday’s outing showcased the exact traits Sacramento lacks when Domantas Sabonis is sidelined: quick second jumps, relentless screen-setting and contagious enthusiasm. Cardwell grabbed five boards in the first five minutes of his shift, repeatedly igniting transition opportunities for Keon Ellis and Jordan Ford. Although his 4-for-11 shooting line underscores raw footwork, the former Auburn Tiger’s touch around the rim has improved to 59 percent in January after sitting at 48 percent in December.
Local analysts are now calling for Sacramento to convert the rookie’s two-way pact into a standard contract to secure his playoff eligibility and protect him from poaching rivals. Kings blog A Royal Pain notes that Cardwell “is already earning more minutes than veterans Dario Šarić and Doug McDermott” and “should be in the majors permanently”. Waiving an end-of-bench option such as Šarić would open the 15-man slot without tax implications, and Cardwell’s cap hit would remain at the rookie minimum.
Beyond box-score impact, advanced metrics strengthen his case. Sacramento’s defensive rating plummets from 119.4 to 111.2 when Cardwell is on the floor, and opponents are shooting just 55 percent in the restricted area against him – a team best. His screen-assist rate (4.8 per 36 minutes) also trails only Sabonis.
What’s next? With Sabonis nursing a sore knee and Precious Achiuwa and Drew Eubanks providing inconsistent rim protection, Brown is expected to keep Cardwell in the regular rotation during the upcoming four-game road trip. A breakout against conference heavyweights like the Denver Nuggets on Friday could accelerate roster-conversion talks ahead of the February 8 trade deadline.
Keyword recap: Dylan Cardwell, Sacramento Kings, rookie center, two-way contract, Houston Rockets, NBA 2025-26 season, defensive rating, double-double pursuit, Kings roster spot, Mike Brown rotation.
