Doc Rivers Breaks Silence on His Next Coaching Move — NBA Shake-Up Ahead
• Hot Trendy News
With the Milwaukee Bucks’ regular-season finale hours away, veteran head coach Doc Rivers confirmed he has not yet decided whether he will retire from coaching or return for a 26th NBA sideline campaign, telling reporters he will “take a little time” before making an announcement.
League insiders, however, increasingly believe the 2008 championship coach will not be on Milwaukee’s bench next season. A HoopsHype report said the “growing expectation within league circles” is that Rivers will shift into an undefined front-office role with the Bucks, opening the door for a new coaching search. Early names linked to the potential vacancy include former Bucks assistant Taylor Jenkins, current assistant Darvin Ham and Pelicans interim coach James Borrego.
The decision comes at a milestone moment for Rivers. On April 4 he was selected for enshrinement in the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame, a crowning achievement that friends say has prompted reflection on the 62-year-old’s future. Combining that honor with a taxing season marked by injuries to star forward Giannis Antetokounmpo, Rivers admitted “family pulls a little harder now,” noting that he has seven grandchildren he rarely sees during the grind of an 82-game schedule.
Rivers owns 1,145 regular-season victories—ninth-most in NBA history—and has steered five different franchises to the playoffs. Yet Milwaukee’s disappointing finish, currently locked into the play-in range after entering October with title expectations, has renewed debate about whether a fresher voice is needed in the locker room. Sources say general manager Jon Horst would welcome Rivers’ strategic input in a senior advisory capacity while pursuing a coach who can maximize the remaining prime years of Antetokounmpo and Damian Lillard.
Should Rivers step away, his legacy in Milwaukee will be brief but influential. Players credit him with installing more ball-screen diversity for Lillard and championing a switch-heavy defensive scheme that kept the Bucks top-10 in efficiency despite roster turnover. “He sees the game two plays ahead,” one assistant said. “That insight would be just as valuable upstairs.”
For now, all eyes remain on Rivers’ timeline. The coach reiterated he will consult with his family and ownership “within days” of the season’s conclusion. Until then, speculation will swirl—and the NBA coaching carousel may start spinning sooner than expected.
