Dick Vitale to Call First NCAA Tournament Game Alongside Charles Barkley in Must-See ESPN Collaboration
• Hot Trendy News
Legendary Voices Finally Share the Mic
College basketball is about to get a double dose of star power as ESPN icon Dick Vitale teams with TNT’s Charles Barkley for two high-profile broadcasts this season. Their first assignment is the Kentucky-Indiana showdown on December 13, airing at 7:30 p.m. ET on ESPN, followed by a First Four NCAA Tournament game in March that will be simulcast on truTV.
Vitale’s Long-Awaited March Madness Debut
Although “Dickie V” has been ESPN’s signature college-hoops analyst since 1979, CBS and Turner have historically held tournament rights, leaving him on the sidelines each March. The new ESPN–TNT collaboration finally clears a path for Vitale, 86, to call his first NCAA Tournament game—something he has publicly wished for since at least 2013.
Quotes From the Booth
“Are you serious!? I can’t wait to join ‘Sir Charles’ … I am so honored and thrilled that Chuck asked me,” Vitale said in a statement released Monday.
Barkley echoed the excitement: “I told these guys one of my goals is to do a game with Dick Vitale because he’s been great for college basketball,” the Hall-of-Famer added.
Cancer Battle and Triumphant Return
Vitale’s return is especially poignant after multiple cancer diagnoses kept him off the air for extended stretches. Declared cancer-free in January and back behind the mic for Duke-Texas on Nov. 4, he now looks healthier and more energized than ever.
Why This Matters for Fans and Networks
• Cross-Network Synergy: The partnership deepens ESPN and TNT’s growing collaboration, which already brought TNT’s “Inside the NBA” studio show to ESPN airwaves this season.
• Viewer Buzz: Pairing the sport’s most animated analyst with one of basketball’s biggest personalities promises can’t-miss television, boosting ratings during a crucial ratings window.
• Recruiting Edge: Programs involved—Kentucky, Indiana and the yet-to-be-named First Four teams—gain added exposure, an underrated benefit amid NIL-era competition.
How to Watch
• Kentucky vs. Indiana – Dec 13, 7:30 p.m. ET, ESPN
• First Four – March (date TBA), truTV and streaming on the NCAA March Madness Live app
Search interest around “Dick Vitale,” “Charles Barkley college basketball,” and “Vitale first NCAA Tournament broadcast” is already climbing. Expect that spike to intensify as countdown clocks hit single digits and two broadcasting legends finally shout “It’s awesome, baby!” from the same booth.
