Detroit Pistons Trade Rumors: Blockbuster Knicks-Style Deal in Works for Elite 3-Point Shooter
• Hot Trendy News
Detroit Pistons fans have two fresh reasons to be optimistic in mid-July: a headline-grabbing free-agency splash and an encouraging start to Las Vegas Summer League play.
Detroit’s front office moved quickly when the market opened, reportedly landing veteran forward John Collins on a three-year, $51 million deal. The 28-year-old averaged 13.4 points and 5.2 rebounds with the Clippers last season and slots in as a proven stretch-four who can ease the scoring load on Cade Cunningham while providing much-needed floor spacing. Collins’ arrival also offers insurance as Detroit negotiates with restricted free agent Jalen Duren and adjusts to the earlier trade of Isaiah Stewart, keeping the front-court rotation flexible heading into training camp.
On the floor in Vegas, the Pistons bounced back from an opening loss to Philadelphia by outlasting Cleveland 103-94, improving to 1-1 and setting up a prime-time showdown tonight against the New York Knicks. First-round pick D.J. Cartwright has been the early headliner, flashing NBA-ready poise as a primary ball-handler and connecting on 5-of-9 attempts from deep against the Cavaliers. Second-year wing Ausar Thompson continues to stuff box scores with his trademark all-court energy, while two-way center Ryan Kalkbrenner has shown rim-protecting chops that could earn him a look once the regular season begins.
Coaches are emphasizing tempo and three-point volume—areas where Detroit ranked in the league’s bottom five last year. Through two games, the Summer League roster is averaging 34 three-point attempts and forcing 18 turnovers per contest, tangible signs that Monty Williams’ revamped system is taking root even without Cunningham and other veterans in uniform.
Collins is expected to be introduced formally after he clears league physicals later this week. Pairing his pick-and-pop game with Cunningham’s downhill playmaking and Thompson’s slashing should give Detroit a modern offensive trio capable of lifting the club out of the Eastern Conference basement. Add in Cartwright’s upside and a projected $18 million of remaining cap flexibility, and the Pistons suddenly look positioned to chase a Play-In spot—something fans at Little Caesars Arena haven’t seen since 2019.
Tonight’s Knicks matchup offers another glimpse into that future. A strong performance could push Detroit into the Summer League quarterfinal mix and, more importantly, solidify roles for young contributors before the full roster reconvenes for September’s training camp.
