Cubs’ Matthew Boyd Hits IL with Biceps Strain—What Chicago’s Rotation Does Next
• Hot Trendy News
Chicago Cubs left-hander Matthew Boyd was placed on the 15-day injured list Monday afternoon after imaging revealed a moderate biceps strain, dealing an early-season blow to a rotation already searching for stability. The move comes just five days after the veteran struck out 10 Los Angeles Angels hitters in his second start of the year, a bounce-back performance that seemed to signal he had fully recovered from last season’s heavy workload.
According to the club, Boyd felt discomfort during his between-start bullpen session and was sent for further evaluation. While the Cubs did not announce an exact timetable, comparable strains typically sideline pitchers two to four weeks. Manager Craig Counsell called the decision “precautionary,” emphasizing that the team wants to avoid a setback that could linger deep into the summer.
Javier Assad, recalled from Triple-A Iowa, will slide into Boyd’s spot and is expected to start Tuesday’s series opener against the Brewers. The 28-year-old right-hander posted a 1.13 ERA across two minor-league outings and threw 75 pitches in his most recent appearance, giving Chicago a reasonably stretched-out option for a critical early-April division matchup.
Boyd’s absence magnifies questions about the Cubs’ rotation depth. Jameson Taillon remains sidelined with a shoulder issue, and youngster Jordan Wicks is on an innings plan. Chicago may accelerate top prospect Cade Horton’s timeline if additional injuries surface, but for now the front office hopes its stop-gap arms can tread water until Boyd and Taillon return.
Before landing on the IL, Boyd flashed the swing-and-miss fastball-slider combo that motivated the Cubs to sign him to a two-year, $29 million deal last winter. His whiff rate through two starts sat above 30 percent, and he generated nine ground-ball outs against the Angels, a key development for a pitcher who surrendered 30 homers a season ago.
Fantasy baseball managers should resist the urge to drop Boyd outright. A short stay on the shelf would position him to face a softer May schedule featuring the Marlins and Pirates. Meanwhile, Assad profiles as a streaming option in deeper leagues but carries limited strikeout upside.
For the Cubs, the immediate focus is damage control. After a 3-7 start, losing another rotation anchor threatens to deepen an early standings hole. Counsell noted that high-leverage reliever Adbert Alzolay could piggyback Assad if pitch counts become an issue, signaling a potential bullpen game strategy until Boyd rejoins the staff.
As Chicago awaits medical updates, the organization can at least lean on its improved defense and a resurgent offense led by Seiya Suzuki to weather the storm. But with two starters now on the IL, the path back to contention may hinge on how quickly Matthew Boyd’s biceps heals and whether the next man up can seize the opportunity.
