Sirens wailed across Cook, Will, DuPage and Lake counties this morning as the National Weather Service issued a tornado warning that stayed in effect until 11:30 a.m., riding in on a fast-moving squall line packing 70–80 mph winds and torrential rain. The storms triggered ground stops at O’Hare and Midway, snarling dozens of departures, while forecasters warned that gusts could rival the force of an EF-0 tornado even without a visible funnel. By midday nearly 300,000 ComEd customers—most in Cook and Will counties—were without electricity after trees and live wires toppled under the onslaught. The utility pre-staged repair crews but cautioned residents to treat every downed line as energized. Chicago’s Forestry Bureau urged 311 callers to report blocked streets as chain-saw teams fanned out citywide. Meteorologists said the severe complex developed overnight along the Mississippi River and accelerated east at 55 mph, giving urban dwellers little lead time. “These winds can imitate tornado damage,” warned NWS meteorologist Kevin Donofrio, adding that embedded rotation remained possible as the line raced toward Lake Michigan. Radar indicated bursts of 2+ inches of rain per hour, quickly filling MWRD reservoirs already near capacity. What to do now • Stay in a basement or interior room away from windows until the all-clear. • Keep phones charged; battery banks are likely to be critical during prolonged outages. • Avoid travel on elevated roadways and near construction cranes where wind loading is highest. • Report outages to ComEd (800-334-7661) and steer clear of any fallen limbs contacting wires. More storms could redevelop this afternoon as the cold front stalls, and the NWS says additional watches are “probable.” For real-time updates, monitor NOAA Weather Radio or local media.
