Chicago Bears Land Linebacker Devin Bush on $30M Contract—Inside the Game-Changing Free-Agency Coup

Linebacker Devin Bush is heading to the Windy City after agreeing to a three-year, $30 million contract that includes $21 million guaranteed with the Chicago Bears. The deal—confirmed by multiple league sources early Monday—signals Chicago’s intention to rebuild its second level around Bush’s sideline-to-sideline speed and proven play-making ability. Bush, still just 27, is coming off a career season for the Cleveland Browns in which he registered 125 tackles, seven tackles for loss, three interceptions (two returned for touchdowns) and forced two fumbles while starting all 17 games. That breakout campaign priced him out of Cleveland; the Browns reportedly hoped to retain him but could not match Chicago’s offer. For the Bears, Bush fills the hole created when veteran Tremaine Edmunds was released last week in a cap-saving move. General manager Ryan Poles freed up $15 million in space, then quickly reinvested it in a younger, faster defender who fits defensive coordinator Ejiro Evero’s aggressive 4-3 scheme. Expect Bush to slide into the weak-side role, pairing with emerging starter D’Marco Jackson to give Chicago one of the NFL’s quickest linebacker tandems. Drafted 10th overall by Pittsburgh in 2019, Bush flashed elite athleticism early in his Steelers tenure before an ACL tear slowed his momentum. Short one-year stops in Seattle and Cleveland proved he could still run, cover and, most importantly, stay healthy—he has not missed a game in two seasons. Chicago is betting that trend continues as the franchise pushes to contend in the NFC North behind new head coach Ben Johnson and rookie quarterback Caleb Williams. From an on-field standpoint, Bush’s arrival should immediately boost the Bears’ pass coverage at the second level, an area that allowed the league’s sixth-highest opposing completion rate in 2025. His closing burst also projects to help against outside-zone rushing attacks favored by division rivals Detroit and Minnesota. Off the field, Bush brings championship pedigree—he won two national titles at Michigan—and a reputation as a vocal leader in the locker room, attributes Chicago’s young roster desperately needs. If he replicates last season’s production, the Bears may have landed the value signing of 2026 NFL free agency.
