Charles Barkley Blasts ‘Broken’ College Sports, Warns Auburn He’ll Pull Multi-Million Donations
• Hot Trendy News
Charles Barkley has never shied away from blunt opinions, but his latest salvo may be his most pointed yet. Speaking on Barstool Sports’ “Pardon My Take” podcast this week, the Hall-of-Famer blasted TNT executives for leaving the Emmy-winning “Inside the NBA” crew “in the dark” during the network’s unsuccessful bid to retain NBA media rights.
Barkley said he learned second-hand—via congratulatory texts from ESPN personalities—that Warner Bros. Discovery had struck a licensing deal sending “Inside the NBA” to ESPN beginning with the 2025-26 season. “We were reading the internet to find out if we were going to get fired,” he fumed, adding that longtime host Ernie Johnson “deserved better.”
The 11-year, $76 billion pact the NBA signed with ESPN/ABC, NBC and Amazon in 2024 shut TNT out of game broadcasts, ending a 35-year relationship. While the licensing agreement keeps the beloved studio show alive, Barkley warned that the chemistry that made “Inside” appointment viewing could be difficult to replicate in Bristol.
“They’re trading us like players,” he joked, before turning serious: “We don’t know how different it’s going to be.” His comments echo concerns from fans who worry ESPN’s tighter format and corporate tone may dilute the free-wheeling style Barkley, Shaquille O’Neal and Kenny Smith perfected alongside Johnson.
The NBA icon’s frustration is amplified by his deep loyalty to network staffers. Last season Barkley revealed he declined offers exceeding $100 million from rival broadcasters because he didn’t want production colleagues to lose their jobs if he walked away. Now, many of those same coworkers face relocation or uncertainty as ESPN finalizes its studio infrastructure.
Industry analysts note that ESPN plans to feature the quartet on marquee windows—Christmas Day, opening week and the NBA Finals—while leveraging the show across ESPN+ and social platforms. That exposure could further elevate Barkley’s cultural footprint, already boosted by his popular “Charles & Shaq” podcast and a recent cameo in the Netflix series “Winning Time.”
Still, Barkley’s critique lands at a sensitive moment for Warner Bros. Discovery, which is trimming billions in costs amid a streaming pivot. Media-rights experts say the company held a contractual “matching” clause but opted against equaling the record fee. Barkley called the decision “short-sighted,” arguing the network sacrificed its flagship property and the goodwill that came with it.
For viewers, the shake-up means the 2024-25 campaign will be the final season of “Inside the NBA” on its iconic Atlanta set. Expect farewell tributes, retrospective segments and, if Barkley gets his wish, a “truth-telling” documentary about how the deal went down.
Search interest in “Charles Barkley” has surged since the podcast dropped, reflecting both nostalgia for the show’s TNT era and intrigue over its ESPN future. With training camp only eight months away, the Round Mound of Rebound has once again made himself the story—proving that, on or off the court, Barkley’s voice still moves the NBA needle.
