Avalanche Star Brock Nelson Chases Historic Olympic Gold–Stanley Cup Double in Showdown vs. Wild
• Hot Trendy News
Colorado Avalanche center Brock Nelson skated in his 1,000th NHL game on Monday against the Edmonton Oilers, becoming the 382nd player in league history and only the 13th active skater to hit the milestone. The Warroad, Minnesota native logged 901 of those contests with the New York Islanders before a 2025 trade sent him to Colorado, where he quickly earned a three-year, $7.5-million extension.
Now 34, Nelson is enjoying a resurgent season on the Avalanche’s second line, tallying 33 goals and 32 assists through 79 games—his best point pace since 2024. His two-way reliability has helped Colorado lock up home-ice advantage in the opening round, while his veteran presence steadies a roster chasing its second Stanley Cup in four years.
Although the milestone came on the road, Ball Arena will salute Nelson during Thursday’s home finale against Seattle. Teammates already commemorated the achievement with a pre-game “Brock Star” tribute video and gold-trimmed jersey patch, underscoring how seamlessly the longtime Islander has integrated into Denver’s locker room.
Nelson’s climb to 1,000 was anything but linear. Drafted 30th overall in 2010, he spent two collegiate seasons at North Dakota and another two in the AHL before debuting during the 2013 playoffs. He proceeded to post eight 20-goal campaigns for New York, ranking sixth on the franchise’s all-time games-played list when the rebuild-minded Isles dealt him for top prospect Calum Ritchie and a 2027 first-round pick.
Since arriving in Colorado, Nelson has added a new dimension to his résumé: winning. He captured Olympic gold with Team USA in February—scoring twice in Milan—and could join the ultra-exclusive “Triple Gold plus 1,000 Games” club if the Avalanche lift the Cup this June. Only four players in NHL history have earned Olympic gold, a Stanley Cup and 1,000 appearances.
Beyond the record books, Nelson’s durability may be his greatest asset. He has missed just 15 regular-season games over the past decade, thanks largely to a streamlined training regimen focused on core stability and recovery-day skating. Coaches credit that consistency for Colorado’s league-leading 53.7 percent faceoff win rate when he is on the ice.
As the postseason looms, Nelson’s milestone serves as both a personal triumph and a timely reminder of the playoff-tested depth that separates true contenders from early exits. If his 1,000th game is any indication, the Avalanche’s newest ironman isn’t ready to slow down—and neither are their championship ambitions.
