A fast-moving March storm has triggered new blizzard warnings from the northern Plains to the Upper Midwest while heavy snow continues to hammer the Washington Cascades, extending a turbulent week of winter weather across the U.S. National Weather Service offices in South Dakota and southwest Minnesota upgraded existing winter storm watches late Friday, warning of white-out conditions, wind gusts up to 55 mph and 6–15 inches of snow from Saturday night through early Monday. Counties under the Blizzard Warning include Beadle, Kingsbury, Faulk, Lincoln, Nobles, Pipestone and Brookings, where travel “will be extremely dangerous or impossible,” the agency said. Timing and impacts • Snow spreads into central South Dakota Saturday evening, racing eastward overnight. • Peak blizzard conditions arrive before dawn Sunday; worst visibility along I-29, I-90 and US-14 corridors. • Power outages and tree damage are possible as 40-55 mph gusts whip dry, powdery snow. • Dangerous wind chills near -15 °F are forecast Sunday night behind the Arctic front. Snow totals by region • East-central SD: 5–9 inches, locally 12". • Southwest MN: 6–13 inches plus light ice glaze. • Missouri River Valley (Pierre to Chamberlain): 3–5 inches but blizzard-level blowing snow. Pacific Northwest update Farther west, a separate system keeps blizzard warnings in effect for Washington’s Cascade passes through at least Wednesday evening. Several feet of snow combined with an atmospheric river have already closed parts of Stevens and Snoqualmie passes, and forecasters expect additional 1–3 feet at elevations above 3,000 feet. What drivers should do 1. Delay non-essential travel; check 511 for live road closures. 2. Stock vehicles with blankets, high-energy snacks, jumper cables and a phone power bank. 3. Keep at least half a tank of fuel to avoid stalled engines in sub-zero wind chills. 4. If stranded, stay with the vehicle, run the engine 10 minutes each hour and clear the exhaust pipe. Home preparation tips • Charge devices and gather flashlights before the storm hits. • Insulate exposed pipes; bitter wind chills can freeze water lines within hours. • Secure outdoor furniture and lightweight farm equipment against 50 mph gusts. • Have a three-day supply of food, water and prescriptions. Looking ahead Models show the Midwest blizzard exiting Monday, but another clipper could drop light snow Tuesday. In the Northwest, the atmospheric river tapers by Friday, yet avalanche danger will remain high above timberline. Stay tuned to local NWS offices and social media for fresh warnings as this volatile pattern persists.
