Big Bear Bald Eaglet Sandy Survives Nest Fall, Soars on First Flight
• Hot Trendy News
Big Bear Lake, Calif. — Sandy, the older of Big Bear’s two famous bald eaglets, stunned thousands of webcam viewers Sunday when she slipped off the nest rim and “accidentally fledged,” flapping to a lower branch before gliding out of camera range. Friends of Big Bear Valley (FOBBV), which operates the 24-hour Eagle Cam, later located the 10-week-old bird on a nearby perch and reported that her wingbeats looked strong and controlled.
The unplanned first flight came during a sibling traffic jam: Luna tried to hop past Sandy onto the nest, nudging her sister’s talons off the “front porch.” Although eaglets typically fledge between 10 and 14 weeks, early departures can be risky because juvenile flight muscles and landing skills are still developing. FOBBV monitors say Sandy appears healthy but will be watched closely as she masters take-offs and returns to the 145-foot-high Jeffrey pine that overlooks Big Bear Lake.
Why the rush to fly? Biologists note that Jackie and Shadow, the resident adult pair, have been reducing food deliveries to encourage both eaglets to exercise their wings. The strategy seems to be working: Luna has been seen helicoptering above the nest while Sandy practices long jumps across the rim.
Gender mystery solved — probably
After weeks of crowd-sourced speculation, FOBBV’s acoustic analysis suggests the brood is a sister-brother duo: Sandy’s deeper call points to a female, while Luna’s higher pitch indicates a male. Size differences in shoulder width and ankle thickness back up the audio data, though the sexes won’t be confirmed unless blood tests are performed, something the nonprofit avoids to keep the nest wild.
Fireworks fight heats up
Sunday’s drama adds urgency to a growing petition that asks Big Bear Lake to cancel or relocate its July 4 fireworks show, scheduled less than two miles from the nest. Wildlife advocates warn that sudden booms could spook Jackie and Shadow, leaving the fledglings hungry and exposed during their most vulnerable weeks. City officials say the 60-year tradition will proceed but emphasize that the launch site faces away from the eagle territory.
What’s next for Sandy and Luna?
• First sustained flights: Expect both eaglets to expand their aerial range over the next 7–10 days.
• Hunting lessons: Parents will continue food drops but gradually shift to mid-air pass-offs to teach self-feeding.
• Webcam milestones: Viewers can watch live on FOBBV’s YouTube channel; moderators post daily time stamps of notable flights.
For now, Sandy is resting after her surprise adventure while Luna eyes the open sky. Whether the siblings’ next flights are intentional or accidental, one thing is certain: Big Bear’s eagle family is about to own the summer skies — fireworks or not.
