Barcelona produced a five-star performance at the Benito Villamarín on Saturday evening, beating Real Betis 5-2 in a pulsating La Liga EA Sports Week 9 fixture. The result keeps Xavi’s side within striking distance of leaders Real Madrid while piling pressure on Manuel Pellegrini’s Andalusians, who have now taken just one point from their last four league matches. Ferran Torres book-ended the night with goals in the 7th and 86th minutes, taking his league tally to six, but it was nineteen-year-old starlet Lamine Yamal who stole the show. The winger’s sublime curling finish on 31 minutes put Barça 2-0 up and made him the youngest player in club history to reach 15 top-flight strikes. Betis briefly rallied after the break when Isco converted from the spot following a Jules Koundé handball, but substitute Raphinha’s thunderbolt in minute 62 restored the two-goal cushion. Ayoze Pérez made it 3-2 moments later, raising the volume inside the Villamarín, yet Barcelona’s superior midfield control—driven by Ilkay Gündoğan’s 98 percent pass accuracy—eventually suffocated the hosts. João Felix added a fourth on the counter before Torres rounded off the rout with a deft dink over Rui Silva. Key talking points • Tactical tweak: Xavi abandoned his usual 4-3-3 for a fluid 3-2-2-3, pushing João Cancelo into midfield during build-up play to outnumber Betis’ double pivot. The gamble paid off as Barça finished with 63 percent possession and a season-high 17 passes into the final third from Rodrigo Hernández. • Defensive frailty: Betis have now conceded 14 goals in their last five matches, the worst run since 2019, and must shore up quickly ahead of next week’s trip to San Mamés. • Title race implication: Barcelona move to 24 points, two behind Madrid, while Betis slip to seventh.
