Austin Wynns Joins Angels: Veteran Catcher’s Clutch Experience Could Ignite 2026 Playoff Run

The Los Angeles Angels have shored up their battered catching corps by signing veteran backstop Austin Wynns to a minor-league contract and immediately optioning him to Triple-A Salt Lake Bees. The move follows a brutal week in which starter Logan O’Hoppe landed on the injured list with a fractured left hand, while newly acquired veteran Travis d’Arnaud entered concussion protocol, leaving manager Ron Washington with only prospect Edgar Quero on the active roster. Wynns, 33, opened 2026 with the Oakland Athletics but was designated for assignment after going 2-for-26 (.077) across nine games, though scouts still grade him as an above-average receiver and game-caller. He accepted free agency on May 14 and inked his deal with Los Angeles two days later; the Bees officially added him to their active roster on May 16. A 2013 tenth-round pick of the Orioles, Wynns owns a .228/.273/.334 career slash line in 279 MLB games while earning praise for limiting the running game and guiding young pitching staffs. He logged big-league innings with Baltimore, San Francisco and Oakland before this latest stop in Anaheim. For the Angels, the signing offers immediate defensive stability at Triple-A and a low-cost insurance policy should Quero struggle or another injury strike. If Wynns gets the call, his strong framing metrics and familiarity with West-coast pitching staffs could make him a seamless fit behind the plate during a pivotal stretch of the 2026 playoff chase.
