Apple Digital ID Passport: How Your iPhone Becomes Your Official ID in 2025
• Hot Trendy News
Apple has officially rolled out Digital ID, a new Apple Wallet feature that lets U.S. iPhone and Apple Watch users create a secure, encrypted version of their passport and present it at more than 250 TSA checkpoints nationwide.
Announced on November 12, 2025, Digital ID extends the wallet-first strategy that previously supported state driver’s licenses by turning the U.S. passport into a tap-to-verify credential. Travelers can now breeze through airport security by double-clicking the side button, choosing “Digital ID,” and holding their device near an identity reader—no need to hand over a paper booklet or unlock the phone.
Setting up Digital ID takes less than five minutes:
1. Open Apple Wallet, tap the “+,” and select Digital ID.
2. Scan the passport’s photo page and NFC chip to confirm authenticity.
3. Complete a quick selfie with facial movements for biometric verification.
Once approved, the encrypted ID stays on-device and can be revoked instantly from Find My if the phone is lost.
Apple stresses that Digital ID is not yet a replacement for international border crossings; a physical passport is still required when leaving or entering the United States. However, it delivers a REAL ID-compliant alternative for domestic flyers whose state driver’s licenses aren’t Wallet-compatible.
Security remains central to the launch. Passport data never leaves the device, and Apple cannot see when or where the ID is presented. Travelers must authenticate with Face ID or Touch ID before any personal information—name, date of birth, or passport number—is shared. Only the specific data requested by TSA is transmitted, aligning with the “minimum disclosure” standard emerging in digital identity frameworks.
Industry analysts see Apple’s Digital ID as a milestone in the broader shift toward mobile credentials, with potential future acceptance at hotels, car-rental counters, and age-restricted retailers. For airlines, the feature promises shorter queues and lower document-fraud risk, while consumers gain a friction-free path through security lines.
To maximize peace of mind, Apple recommends keeping the physical passport in carry-on luggage until Digital ID support expands to more agencies and international checkpoints. Early adopters should also update to iOS 26.1 or watchOS 13.1 and ensure their passport is undamaged and unexpired before enrollment.
Digital ID in Apple Wallet positions the iPhone as a one-stop travel hub—boarding passes, payment cards, hotel keys, and now a passport—all safeguarded by the Secure Enclave. If you’re planning holiday travel, adding your Digital ID today could shave crucial minutes off your next TSA visit and signal the future of paperless identity.
