Historic day in Fukuoka: 21-year-old Ukrainian sekiwake Aonishiki Arata claimed the Emperor’s Cup on Sunday, defeating yokozuna Hoshoryu in a playoff to become the first wrestler from Ukraine to win a top-division sumo tournament.
Speaking fluent Japanese after the bout, Aonishiki beamed, “I’m happiest that I could show my own style of sumo.” The crowd erupted with chants of “Slava Ukraini!” as the “Blue Whirlwind” made his victory lap.
Playoff thriller
Both men finished regulation at 12-3. In the playoff Hoshoryu sought an outer-leg trip, but Aonishiki countered with his trademark oshi-dashi thrusts and a perfectly timed tsuki-otoshi that sent the yokozuna out of the ring, electrifying Fukuoka Kokusai Center.
Meteoric rise
Born Danylo Yavhusishyn, the former freestyle wrestler reached the makuuchi division just 18 months ago. After an 11-win campaign last basho, he stamped his authority this fortnight with explosive footwork and relentless pushes, cementing the nickname “Blue Whirlwind.”
Message to Ukraine
With Russia’s invasion still raging, Aonishiki said, “I hope today’s victory brings even a little courage to everyone back home,” before draping the Ukrainian flag over his shoulders and circling the dohyo to thunderous applause.
Eyes on ōzeki—and beyond
The triumph puts Aonishiki within reach of promotion to ōzeki at January’s New Year tournament. Asked about future goals, he answered simply: “There’s only one—becoming yokozuna.” His rapid ascent is injecting fresh energy into an increasingly global sport.
