AlaskaAir Just Spiked Checked Bag Prices—See the New Fees Before You Fly
• Hot Trendy News
Alaska Airlines is making headlines on two fronts this April: higher checked-bag fees that kick in today and the carrier’s first-ever transatlantic service from Seattle to Rome later this month.
Higher costs before summer travel
Effective 11 April 2026, the first checked bag on most Alaska Air itineraries now costs $45 (up $5), the second rises to $55 (up $10) and a third jumps to $200 (up $50). The carrier also eliminated its $5 pre-pay discount. Alaska blames “ongoing volatility in fuel prices” for the increase, adding that Club 49 members in Alaska can still check two bags free.
Seattle–Rome nonstop debuts 28 April
In a strategic pivot made possible by its merger with Hawaiian Airlines, Alaska will launch daily seasonal Boeing 787-9 service between Seattle-Tacoma International Airport (SEA) and Rome Fiumicino (FCO). The flight departs SEA at 17:30, arriving in Italy at 13:15 the next day; the return leaves FCO at 15:25, landing in Seattle at 17:45. Strong advance bookings prompted Alaska to upgrade the route from four weekly flights to daily, signaling robust demand for West Coast–to-Mediterranean connectivity.
Delta strikes back in Seattle
Alaska’s move has drawn an immediate competitive response: Delta Air Lines will launch its own SEA–FCO nonstop on 6 May using an Airbus A330-900neo, setting up a premium showdown in Seattle’s long-haul market. Delta’s aircraft offers both Premium Select and Delta One Suites, while Alaska’s 787 features 34 door-equipped business-class suites but no dedicated premium-economy cabin yet.
Why fees and long-haul expansion intersect
Surging jet-fuel prices after fresh Middle East tensions are squeezing airline margins, making ancillary revenue like baggage fees critical. At the same time, long-haul growth gives Alaska Air Group new, higher-yield markets to offset domestic cost pressure. Executives say Seattle will host up to 12 intercontinental destinations by 2030, with London and Iceland slated to follow Rome.
What travelers should know now
1. Book early: introductory Rome fares have been below $800 round-trip in economy but are climbing as seats fill.
2. Pack light or join Club 49 or an Alaska co-branded card program to dodge the new bag charges.
3. Compare products: Alaska’s 787 business suites include privacy doors, while Delta offers a full premium-economy cabin—key for midsize budgets on the 10-hour hop.
Bottom line
Alaska Airlines’ simultaneous fee hike and European debut underscore a bigger pivot: the Seattle-based carrier is betting that premium long-haul expansion will finance modest fare increases at home while keeping it competitive against Delta’s growing presence in the Pacific Northwest. Travelers should expect continued route announcements—and, unfortunately, more fee tweaks—as the two airlines battle for Seattle’s global gateway status.
